BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA MEMBERS FROM CARLSBAD INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Business Professionals of America chapter at Carlsbad Intermediate School recently travelled to Orlando, FL to compete at BPA’s 2017 National Leadership Conference (NLC). According to the BPA website, the national organization has “45,000 members in over 1,800 chapters in 25 states and Puerto Rico.” The Carlsbad Intermediate Chapter competes in the Middle Level division which is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
This year, CIS was represented by eleven of its 35 members at the national level in several business related events. The chapter members who represented Carlsbad Intermediate were: Kamili Burnett, Jacob Caughron, Kadence Edgell, Andrew Jimenez, Aleice Mitchell, Valeria Quezada, Olivia “Livi” Quintana, Maddalen Reid, Carina Stroble, Toni Twitchell, and Jacob Weatherford.
At the awards session for the National Leadership Conference, the top ten finishes are called to the stage and receive medals; then the top three places receive plaques. Given the number of students involved in BPA across the country, being a national qualifier is quite an accomplishment in and of itself.
Here are the National Leadership Conference results for Carlsbad Intermediate School students: Toni Twitchell had the highest finish of the group, finishing 2nd in the nation in Extemporaneous Speech. CIS had two 3rd place finishes: Olivia Quintana in Prepared Speech and the Web Site Design Team of Kamili Burnett, Aleice Mitchell, and Carina Stroble. Olivia Quintana also placed 5th in Business Fundamentals Concepts and 11th in Computer Literacy Concepts. In Financial Literacy, CIS had a 7th place finish by Andrew Jimenez and a 14th place by Carina Stroble. Jakob Caughron had a 7th place finish in Prepared Speech. Maddalen Reid finished 9th in Graphic Design Promotion and 11th in Entrepreneurship Exploration. Also placing in Graphic Design Promotion were Valeria Quezada (6th) and Aleice Mitchell (14th). In Spreadsheet Applications, Jacob Weatherford finished 13th while Kadence Edgell finished 20th.Carlsbad Intermediate’s BPA advisor, Terry Carrera, was proud of her students’ accomplishments at Nationals and said “They worked hard all year long and it paid off on awards night!
