Carlsbad Intermediate School Students competed at the annual MESA Day STEM competition in Albuquerque NM on March 17th. The students included Tessa Folks, Meadow Jiron, Jenny Xiong, Sarah Bernal-McCullough, Matthew Pavlik, Caedon Carrasco, Emily Hervol, Hannah Kim, Samantha Vasquez, and Joseph Brown. MESA Schools from all over the state of New Mexico competed at the annual event. The students were required to pre-qualify in order to attend. They built a robotic arm to complete timed trials in object relocation and a distance accuracy category. They also wrote a technical paper and designed a poster with engineering and trial details for their robotic arms. They also prepared an oral presentation to speak about the detail of their devices and the problem-solving skills they used.
Team 1 won 1st place in technical paper, technical poster and 4th place overall. Team 2 won 7th place overall. The students on Team 1 were Emily Hervol, Hannah Kim, Samantha Vasquez, and Joseph Brown. The students on Team 2 were Sarah Bernal McCullough, Matthew Pavlik, and Caedon Carrasco.
